Don arrived in Australia in 1959 after earning a BSci degree from Ohio State University and then had travelled extensively at sea by courtesy of the United States Navy.
His first job in Australia was as a biologist at the trout hatchery followed by a decade of marine fisheries assignments with CSIRO including surveys of tropical prawn resources based at Karumba and leading to his establishment there of a prawn farming venture under the auspices of Craig, Mostyn & Co. Pty/Ltd.
His hands-on field work involving a broad spectrum of fisheries management issues in Australia and regions of Oceania now spans sixty years, leaving him with a special appreciation of all manner of seafood items.
My work as a marine biologist began in Australia sixty years ago, long before contemplating authorship of this book about shellfish as seafood of Oceania. By chance my hobby of photography became useful for identifying various live marine and freshwater animals encountered at sea, in estuaries and freshwaters.
Though time and tide have erased their footprints from our shores, history serves to remind us of their important and often heroic efforts which underpinned the development of many of our shellfish resources. Hence, this book about shellfish is dedicated to the peoples of Oceania in recognition of their skills, knowledge and cultural contributions of notable extent.
